The Use Of CRISPR Technology - 1183 Words

In this TED talk, biologist and geneticist, Jennifer Douda, presents a way to edit our DNA with the use of CRISPR technology. This technology allows scientists to change the DNA within our cells that could ultimately allow scientists to cure various genetic disease such as sickle cell anemia, Huntington’s disease and cystic fibrosis etc. The way this technology works is that the Cas9 protein seeks foreign DNA, and precisely cuts that DNA out and eventually degrades it. After the mutated DNA is removed from the double helix, the cells detect the broken DNA double helix, and repairs it by pasting its ends together via a tiny change within the sequence of the DNA, or cells may simply introduce a new sequence of DNA at the site of the break,†¦show more content†¦Currently, CRISPR has been introduced in mice and monkeys. In mice, CRISPR was able to effectively disrupt the gene that codes for coat color. This small change in the mice genome resulted in a litter of solely bl ack pigmented mice, as opposed to a mixture of white and black mice. In monkeys, scientists are testing ways in which this technology can be introduced into an organism, as well as how to better control the reparation of DNA after it has been cut, and limit unintended outcomes. Jennifer Doudna proposed the idea that there should be a global pause in the application of this technology in human embryos until the undesirable outcomes and unknown effects have surfaced, and are carefully tested. She also acknowledged that it is irresponsible to implement the CRISPR technology in humans until its safety is validated, and all ethical concerns are put to rest. TED talks are a great way to find information on trending topics in science as well as other fields, but these presenters can present a lot of bias into their research that challenge the credibility of their work. I would say this source is not very reputable due to the fact that I do not know exactly where Jennifer Doudna got her information from.
